National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day

.

June marks National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to deepen our understanding of the distinct cultures, traditions, languages, and lived experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. It is an opportunity to honour the enduring presence, strength, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on these lands since time immemorial and continue to shape Canada’s past, present, and future.

Established by the House of Commons in 2009 as National Aboriginal History Month, the name was changed to National Indigenous History Month in 2017 to reflect current terminology. In partnership with Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada selected June 21, the summer solstice, as National Indigenous Peoples Day. This date holds deep significance, as many Indigenous communities have long recognized the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, as a time of gathering, celebration, and cultural connection.

Throughout the month, we encourage Sask DLC staff to engage in meaningful learning and community experiences that celebrate Indigenous cultures and perspectives. This may include attending local events such as Powwows, Old-Time Dances, craft and artist markets, cultural gatherings, and conferences. Many communities across Saskatchewan will also host celebrations and events on June 21 in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Staff are also encouraged to support Indigenous-owned businesses by purchasing Indigenous-made products, artwork, clothing, and household items, as well as by exploring books, podcasts, films, and other learning opportunities created by Indigenous voices. Small acts of support and learning can contribute to stronger relationships, greater understanding, and continued reconciliation.

To further support participation and engagement, Sask DLC staff have created an Indigenous Bingo Card. This interactive activity provides a fun and accessible way for staff, students, and families to learn, reflect, and participate in National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day.
