Acknowledging Black History & Black Future’s

Black History Month in Canada, observed every February, honors the remarkable contributions and achievements of Black people. This month provides an opportunity to celebrate, educate, and reflect on the rich history and enduring impact of Black communities across the nation.

Each year, Black History Month adopts a specific theme to guide reflection and learning. The theme for 2025 is “Black Resistance.” This theme emphasizes the many ways Black individuals and communities have resisted oppression, discrimination, and prejudice throughout history. It invites us to celebrate their resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

In addition, February is also recognized as Black Futures Month, a forward-looking observance dedicated to envisioning and working toward positive futures for Black people. While Black History Month reflects on the past, Black Futures Month highlights the present contributions and aspirations of Black individuals and communities, focusing on building a more just and equitable society.

Observing Black Futures Month involves events and discussions centered on the ongoing influence of Black people and their role in shaping a brighter future. Together, Black History and Black Futures Months remind us that these contributions and visions deserve recognition and celebration not just in February, but all year long.
